iOS - BYOD Demo Walkthrough
In this quick walkthrough we're going show you how to enroll and configure your iOS device for the BYOD demo.
In order to complete this demo please make sure you have the following:
- An iOS device
- A valid account in the VMware TestDrive environment, signup here if you don't
- Activated the AirWatch service from the My Services tab in the VMware Testdrive Demo Portal. See instructions for turning on this service here.
- Activated Blue Jeans and Salesforce from the My Services tab in the VMware Testdrive Demo Portal (Blue Jeans is not yet available to partners)
- Network access from your device and TCP port 443 enabled on your network
First, navigate to the app store on the device and download the AirWatch Agent.
Once the agent is installed, launch the app. You will see the main “Welcome to AirWatch!” page with three different authentication methods available for enrollment. In the VMware TestDrive AirWatch instance, we only support enrollment through the “Email Address” method. Click on “Email Address” to continue.
Your email address for Testdrive is the domain with which you registered with at the portal with vmtestdrive.com appended onto the end. For example If your email address is email@example.com your Testdrive email address would be firstname.lastname@example.org
You may also verify which email address to use for enrollment if you refer back to the My Services web page in the VMware TestDrive Demo Portal web application ( portal.vmtestdrive.com). There will be a information icon above the AirWatch feature that will detail the email address to use.
Enter your modified email address into the email address box and click “Next”
The next screen is Group Selection. Group Selection allows for AirWatch to create different types of enrollments for different scenarios. In our case we will select "Enterprise - BYOD Demo" from the dropdown and select "Next".
Now that we have initiated enrollment, we have to authenticate our username against Workspace ONE to ensure we are entitled to enroll into AirWatch.
Now you are the login page, enter your Testdrive credentials and click “Sign In”
Now that you have been authenticated, you will be redirected to ensure you would like to enable AirWatch device management. Click on “Redirect and Enable” to initiate the profile installation steps.
Now you will be prompted to allow the installation of the AirWatch Digital Workspace for your device. Profiles are the policies defined for this enrollment on what AirWatch can manage on your device. Click “Install”.
A warning will appear detailing a generic statement about AirWatch device management. The actual features that can be monitored or controlled by AirWatch on iOS are defined in the profile and vary depending on what has been setup for the particular profile. Click “Install”
In order for any level of device management to be able to take place, we must enable “Remote Management” on IOS. Click “Trust” allowing the VMware TestDrive instance to remotely control the device for the purpose of you being able to AirWatch features.
A verification that the profile was installed will appear. You may review the profiles and click “Done” to continue
Now you will be redirected to be able to open the AirWatch Agent. Click on “Open”
You will see successful completion page titled “Authentication Complete” Click on “Done”
Now in the AirWatch Agent you will see a summary of your device that has now been successfully enrolled.
Next, click the home button to return to the device homepage. You will see a few downloads for applications that have completed and a few in progress.
Once the applications are installed, launch the the Privacy application. The Privacy app reports what corporate information is being collected by the AirWatch Administrative Console. You will see for this BYO Device personal information such as text messages, location, and personal apps is not being collected.
Scroll down to the "What we Collect" section to view User Details and Work Apps are collected. Click "Work Apps" to view more information.
A new page will open with more information about the collected information for Work Apps.
Next, lets launch into the Workspace application to view some of the features of Workspace ONE.
Your company tenant will be pre-populated so all you need to do is select "Connect".
Next, login to Workspace ONE with your Testdrive user credentials and select "Sign In".
You will first see the Launcher screen which contains the apps that have been activated for your account by your administrator. Users can also add applications from the catalog to build on this list. Note you can filter the list on the top left with the drop down as well as search for apps for quick access.
Next, navigate to the Catalog tab and you will see a variety of web apps, iOS native applications, virtual apps, and thin apps available for your user. Applications with a key in the top right corner indicates that the device must be enrolled in AirWatch in order to access. Since our device is already enrolled we are able to access these. Click "install" to download any native apps to the device or "Add" to add any apps to the launcher screen.
Now that we have reviewed Workspace ONE lets navigate back to the device home screen and launch some of the iOS applications which have been configured using App Config (ACE). Currently, Salesforce and Socialcast are available for all Testdrive users but Blue Jeans is not yet available to partners using Testdrive.

First launch the Blue Jeans application:
You will notice the app has been configured to the correct company tenant through ACE and your device seamlessly signs in through Workspace ONE.
After the device authenticates, navigate through the intro by selecting "Sure" or "Skip for Now".
Next, you will see the app is populated with the user's account information and invites. You can select "Me" at the bottom to show the user's account which was SSOd.
Next, navigate back to the device home screen and select the "Salesforce1" application.
The user will be prompted to accept EULA on first time use. Select "I Accept".
Next, view the user is automatically signed in to their companies environment by Workspace ONE without user interaction.
The user will be prompted to allow access.
Next, you will see the user has been seamlessly signed on to their company's Salesforce without entering environment information due to the App Config which was pushed down through AirWatch.
Return to the device home screen and launch the Socialcast application.
Select "Log In" to move past the intro.
Next, the environment information will be populate for the user through App Config. The user only needs to select "Continue".
The user is seamlessly signed in through Workspace ONE.
Now you will see the user's socialcast home page and can navigate through the app.
Next, return to the device home screen and select the AirWatch Browser Application.
Once the app launches, you will see your homepage for your internal resources as defined in the AirWatch Browser. Here you can see the different restrictions you may have when using the AirWatch Browser. You can setup access into an intranet website, you can set links to public webpages, and you can restrict access to certain websites.
Click Facebook to demonstrate the site has been blocked.
Next, click the home button to return to the device's home screen and launch the AirWatch Content Locker application.
Swipe through the entry screens and select "Got it, Thanks."
Click anywhere on the device to reach the Content Repository list after reading the overlay.
First, we will open the AirWatch Corporate Content. Select "AirWatch Content".
Select the "World Wide Enterprises" content.
Next, you will see the demo documents available which include a variety of different file formats. For now, select the "UNRESTRICTED ACCESS - Sales Training Manual" to open the document.
Observe the PDF loads, you are able to swipe back and forth between pages, change orientation, and zoom in/out.
Next, select the export button to view you are able to open this document into managed applications, view the info or print. We are able to control these settings for each document. Next, select the "Back" button in the top left and click to open the "RESTRICTED ACCESS - Financial Forecast Training".
You will see this restricted document has the user's name watermarked across the page. Regardless of zooming in or changing orientation the watermark remains.
Additionally, when selecting export the user is not able to print or open this document into any other applications.
Select "Back" in the top right to navigate back to the full list of available repositories demonstrating a subset of the available integration options.
Now you will click back to the iOS home page and we will configure the Meeting Room application. This is a corporate authored iOS application to demonstrate some of the features of the AirWatch SDK. With the Meeting Room app, it is an iOS application to show how you could reserve meeting rooms on your campus. By using this app you highlight authentication using the AirWatch SDK. You also highlight how you can use AirWatch to push down custom iOS application to your enrolled devices. Click to open the Meeting Room application.
Upon setup you will see the different features of the AirWatch SDK that this application is using. For example you see that our authentication was successful, you can see the type of authentication the application used, and you can see that it was able to connect to the backend of our application via the AirWatch Tunnel. Once the application authenticate select "Tap to continue".
Now you can see the UI of our Meeting Room application.
To demonstrate the internal endpoint is only available inside the meeting room application through the AirWatch tunnel, select the endpoint at the top and copy the URL.
Next, navigate to Safari on the device and demonstrate the site is unreachable outside of Meeting Room.
