VMware and NVIDIA TryGRID Horizon Desktop Overview

In this quick walkthrough we are going to show you an overview of the features of the VMware and NVIDIA TryGRID Horizon Desktop in the VMware Testdrive environment.

  • In order to perform the full end-to-end demo make sure you have the following:

    • A valid account in the VMware TestDrive environment, signup here if you do not already have an account. 
    • Horizon Client installed on your local machine or supported web browser

    Video Overview

    Launch the Horizon Desktop titled "VMware & NVIDIA GRID Test Drive" from the Horizon Client or VMware Horizon HTML Access. Once you have launched the desktop we will walk you through the available software and demos you can run to highlight NVIDIA GRID vGPU. The VMware and NVIDIA GRID Horizon Desktop runs the GRID M60-2Q GPU Profile which translates to 2GBs of graphics memory powered by NVIDIA Tesla M60 cards.

    The first program we will highlight is Siemens NX 10.0 which is an integrated solution for product design, engineering, and manufacturing. To launch it, load the Start Menu and then click "All Programs" 

    From All Programs, navigate to the Siemens NX 10.0 folder, and then click on "NX 10.0" 

    The Siemens PLM Software NX 10.0 will launch and start to load. 

    Once the application has loaded, you will see the main overview dashboard. 

    We will click "Open" to launch a model. 

    By default the application points to a directory containing numerous models available for you to open and manipulate for demonstration. A good one is "Crank F_sldprt". Click on that model name and click "OK". 

    Now that the model has loaded you will see all the available opens to you to manipulate the model. Click on the View tab at the top and then click on the circular arrows to move around the part. 

    Click on the part and move it around. 

    Feel free to explore other options within the application to move, reshape, and edit the model. Once you are done exit the program. 

    The next item we will demonstrate are the NVIDIA developed 3D demo applications. The first one we will launch is the "Digital Ira". Double click on "Digital Ira" 
    This will load the FaceWorks - Real-time Performance Capture demo. 

    You may use your mouse to move around the face and interact with the demo application. Once you are done with the application close it. 

    The next NVIDIA demo application we will launch is called New Dawn. Double click on "New Dawn" for it to launch. 

    The application window for "A New Dawn" will load, and it is a gaming video demo, this will load automatically. When you are done with the application please close it. 

    Next we will launch a "HD Video." From the quick desktop screen launcher, click on "HD Video". This will launch the video. 

    The HD video will launch and play through. When the video has completed, close the video player application. 

    I've only run through a few of the applications available on the VMware and NVIDIA GRID Horizon Desktop. There are many more applications available for you to use such as Arc GIS, AutoCAD, HTML 5 web applications, Google Earth, Dassault Systems SOLIDWORKS 2015, and much more for you to use to show off NVIDIA GRID vGPU.
